One of the main reasons kids are racially discriminated against in schools is the lack of school vouchers. Black neighborhoods, unfortunately, end up in high poverty meaning kids in poverty will be going to poorly funded public schools and won’t be able to have the option to switch. This means most kids growing up in poverty won’t get a quality education with tutors, well-paid teachers, and most importantly; motivation. People living in poverty should be able to switch to well-funded public schools so they can grow up with the same education as everyone else. The main reason so many people living in poverty grow up to live in poverty is because of this simple to fix an issue that still hasn’t been changed and is affecting and hurting the lives of millions of children in the US per year.

Students living at or below the poverty level tend to have the highest dropout rates. Studies show that students who do not get enough food or sleep are less likely to perform at their full academic potential. Schools know these truths first-hand, and despite efforts to provide students with basic essentials, teachers, administrators and lawmakers know there is simply not enough to go around.

Another problem that exists is removing different cultural and religious experiences from schools. In these two landmark decisions, Engel v. Vitale (1962) and Abington School District v. Schempp (1963), the Supreme Court established what is now the current prohibition on state-sponsored prayer in US schools. Now students don’t even get completely different cultures in their own classrooms to expose themselves to.
